More on Budgets

Ok, apparantly lots of people like (or don't like) budgets, and want to hear more. I have had
a couple people ask me what to do if your expenses exceed your budget. We have been there, and the best advice I can give is to cut things out. There are some things that you may feel are a necessity, but they aren't.
Here are some items that you could cut out or reduce:
Cell Phones - We lived without them before, and we can do it now if necessary.
Home Phone - If everyone has a cell phone, you can use those instead of home phones.
Cable - Who really needs all those channels anyway?
Eating Out - It is much cheaper to eat at home. If you plan your meals in advance, there is less chance you will pick up take out on the way home.
Movie Rentals - Use the library or Redbox ($1 a night).
Clothing - Every store has a clearance rack, shop those instead of all the new stuff. Seriously, finding good deals are fun!
Groceries - OK, you can't actually cut groceries totally out of your budget, but you can lower your grocery budget. I am kind of wierd this way, but I like to see how little I can spend each week. It's kind of like a game for me. There was a time after we had our first child, that things were really tight. We moved from having 2 incomes to only one. We actually lived on a grocery budget of only $25 a week. It can be done! Shop the sales, use coupons, and you will be surprised how much you can save. I think this is the one area where you can easily cut money. It can be fun, give it a try!
You can also get creative and add more money to your budget. There was a time when my husband was employed with a start-up company. Things got tight for the company, so the paychecks weren't always there. I decided to start selling things on Ebay. I picked something I knew a lot about, something easy to ship, and easy for me to get. I chose to sell Gymboree clothing (new). There were tons of Gymboree stores where we lived (Utah), so it made it very easy to put outfits together. It was the best of both worlds for me, I got to shop and get paid! I would buy outfits at 60-70% off and sell them on Ebay. This really helped us live through those tough times. I still sell items on Ebay, it's a great way for me to make extra money. When Target has their huge 75% off toy clearance, I buy items I know will sell well (Lego's, Playmobil, Leap Frog items), I save them and sell them all in November (just before Christmas). This gives me all the money I need to pay for Christmas. Get resourceful! You can look around your house, I am sure there are items you can get rid of.
Here are some ways you can make extra money:
Ebay - http://www.ebay.com/ Really, people will buy anything!
Etsy - http://www.esty.com/ Are you creative? You can sell your handmade wares here. Look around, the site is amazing. It's neat to see what people have come up with. Don't spend! Just look!
Craigslist - http://seattle.craigslist.org/ You can sell items here for FREE!
Babysit - You can do this in your own home & make extra money.

Three $10 Store Coupons to Spend
I actually had 3 $10 off any $10 purchase coupons for 3 stores. Two of them were expiring very soon, so I wanted to make sure to use them. If I didn't use them, that would be like throwing away $30, and I can't do that! I had coupons to the following stores Kohl's, Cabela's & JCPenney. I also stopped at Walgreens, because I had a Register Reward that was about to expire.
Kohl's
Here is what I got, 3 shirts and a pair of Nike's For Dallin. The shirts were 90% off, and the shoes were 80% off. The regular retail price was $83.00.
1.60 shirt (reg. 16.00)
1.60 shirt (reg. 16.00)
1.60 shirt (reg 16.00)
7.00 shoes (reg 35.00)
11.80 sub-total

TOTAL $1.95 (.15 tax)

Cabela's
I needed a manly type gift, and I knew I would be able to find one here.
14.99 Gerber knife tool kit combo (reg. 19.99)
-10.00
TOTAL 6.24 (1.25 tax)
JCPenney
We get ornaments for our kids every year, and this year since we took our first trip to Disneyland, I wanted to get Disney themed ornaments. I plan on putting a photo of each of the boys at Disneyland in each ornament. Allie got a Tinkerbell one earlier. Christmas items were 75% off. The regular price of the 4 ornaments would have been nearly $56 (13.99 each). That is crazy! I will admit I was taking a chance waiting for the clearance sale, but I got exactly what I was hoping for, so I am happy.
14.00 (3.50 x 4) ornaments
-10.00
TOTAL 4.34 (.34 tax)
Walgreens
I only had a $2 Register Reward that was expiring today, and I was even going to let is expire and not use it. GASP! I was going to throw away $2 whole dollars. My Mom called me while I was out and told me that Walgreens had 75% off all of their Christmas items. She knows how I like the deals! So, I decided to stop.
I picked up a roll of wrapping paper that is plain so it can be used for birthdays and 2 bags of Hershey Kisses
.62 Kisses (reg 2.50)
.62 Kisses (reg 2.50)
.99 wrapping paper (reg 3.99)
-2.00 Register Reward
TOTAL .32
So, my grand total for the day is $167.90 worth of stuff for only $12.85. That is over 90% savings. I love this time of year, there are so many great deals. I'd love to hear about any great deals you have gotten recently, just post a comment and let me know.
More Sale News - JCPenney
I am so behind on everything today, it is almost 3:00, and I am just now reading the newspaper. There was a JCPenney ad in the newspaper, and starting tomorrowWednesday, January 31st all of the clearance will be an additional 40% off the marked price (everything is already marked 50% off), so that makes the clearance 70% off the original price. Here is an example:
10.00 Regular price
5.00 Clearance price (50% off)
-2.00 (40% off clearance price)
3.00 = FINAL COST
JCPenney will eventually take an additional 50% off the clearance, making the final discount 75%. Then when they really want to clear out all the leftovers they will to a final markdown and mark things down to $.97, 1.97, 2.97 and 4.97. Usually there isn't too much left when it gets to the final markdown. I find that girls clothing goes much quicker than the boys. Also, in the kids clothing, the smaller sizes usually go quicker than the larger sizes.
Now is the time to start stocking up on winter clothes for next year. The ad says that the additional 40% off is valid through Tuesday, January 20, 2009.
Target Christmas Clearance 75% off!!!
I can't get out today, because my daughter has a play date, but my Mom was sweet enough to run out to Target to check if the rumors of 75% off were true. They are!!!! So run, get yourself to Target, just make sure to save me some stuff, OK?
Make sure to check for everyday type items with holiday packaging. There are Electrasol dishwasher tabs that have a penguin ice skating on the box those should be 75% off. There are Ritz crackers in the shape of snowflakes that should also be 75% off.
I should mention that if you see a TON of something, it may make it to the 90% off markdown. I might wait on my wrapping paper until then, I will have to see how much they have left. 8 Rolls of wrapping paper (reg price 4.00) would cost you 8.00 at 75% off, but at 90% off it would only be 3.60.
Have fun! Since, I can't make it out until this evening, please post your deals, I have to have some fun!

Do You Have a Budget?
With the new year starting, now is a great time to look at your budget and make any necessary changes. Do you have a budget? If not, now is the perfect time to make one. We have a budget set up, and we go over it about 3 times a year, because things change. There are always new things that come up or items that finally get paid off. Examples would be: new medical bills, cars that have been paid off, new insurance needs because of teenager drivers (YIKES! that last one is us for sure). A budget is a big help to let you know exactly how much money you have to spend for certain items. For instance, once you have hit the limit on your grocery budget for the month, you know there is no more to spend. Here is an example of our monthly budget, these are NOT our actual numbers , I am just giving you an idea. Let's say after taxes our take home pay was $4800 a month. With our budget, we pretty much account for every penny, and then stick to the budget we have set.
Mortgage 1800.00
Tithing 600.00
Power 250.00
Phone/internet 100.00
Garbage 30.00
Water 30.00
Cell Phones 75.00
Auto Insurance 100.00
Life Insurance 60.00
Cable 30.00
Medical Bills 100.00
Newspaper 12.00
Gasoline 200.00
Student Loans 300.00
Grocery/Clothing/HBA/Gifts 600.00
Grocery/Clothing/HBA/Gifts 600.00
Savings 200.00
401K 300.00
There are some items in the budget that are fixed (cable, newspaper, life insurance, etc). Then there are items that change some from month to month, an example of this would be our power bill, it is a lot less in the summer than it is in the winter. Another example would be gasoline, because the amount of driving I do varies. I keep a spiral notebook with all of the numbers in our budget. When I pay a bill I write the amount down, under that budget category If there is any money leftover at the end of the month, that goes into a "misc./leftover" category. That amount can then be used for items that either cost a little more that I thought they would (surprise doctor visit), or rolled over into the next month for any surprises that happen that month. Here is an example of what the gasoline and power would look like:
Gasoline
$200.00 (beginning balance)
-33.00 Dec 6
-50.00 Dec 12
-47.00 Dec 24
-50.00 Dec 31
= 20.00 leftover
Power
$250.oo
-242.oo
=8.00
Misc/Leftover
20.00 (from gas)
8.00 (from power)
= 28.00
Let's say the Doctor bills we had for this month were $15 more than I budgeted, I would just take $15 out of the misc category and use it for the medical category. So, the Misc category would now look like this:
Misc
20.00
8.00
8.00
-15.00
= 13.00
If you noticed, I lump all of my groceries/clothing/Heath and Beauty Aids & Gifts together. The reason why I do this, is because if there is a great deal on groceries one month, I will stock up on those items, and spend less on clothing & HBA. We have a nice stock pile on clothing and HBA, so I could go without buying those items if needed. January is a HUGE month for clearance clothing, Christmas items and toys. I will use a lot more of this categories budget for those items then I will for food that month. It works for me to have flexibility for buying these items, but still have a budget total for the items as a whole.
When looking at your budget, you can probably find things you can cut if necessary. For instance, we do not have an expensive cable bill. Our actual bill is about $13, because we chose one that doesn't have all those fancy channels.
I hope this all makes sense to you. If you have any questions, let me know.

Target Christmas Clearance Reminder
Hi All! I don't think I will be here much until after Christmas, so I wanted to post a reminder about the Target Christmas clearance. The Christmas items will go on clearance to 50% off on Friday, December 26th. This will include all of the decorations, wrapping paper, food items, bath and body gift sets, stocking stuffers, paper good, holiday towels, dishes and the toys & games in the Christmas section of the store. You should look out for everyday items that have holiday decorations on them or the packaging, like napkins, glad containers, etc.I don't really buy any of the clearance until it hits 75% off. I am a 75% off kind of gal, 50% off doesn't really do anything for me. Remember the markdown in the Christmas department will start at 50% off, then 75% and finally end at 90% off.
I do check out the clearance at 50% off, so I know what to look for when I am ready to buy. Here are some of the things I look for when it hits 75% off.
1. Small toys and games (for Easter baskets)
2. Wrapping paper. Besides Christmas paper, I look for paper that can be used year round for birthdays (stripes, red w/ dots, anything that doesn't look like it was specific for Christmas) I buy all of my Christmas paper now and save for the next year, I just store it under my bed, so it is out of the way.
3. Decorations that can be used year round. They have lots of silver, gold or glass items that can be used at decorations year round. I have a vase, and a couple candleholders around my house that I got in previous years.
4. Christmas cards (Steve uses cards for work, so I always pick them up the year before.)
5. Ornaments for my kids. We alway buy the kids an ornament each year, that symbolizes something about them or something we did this year. (sports, fav. character etc.) This year I am looking for Disney themed ornaments, because we took our first family trip to Disneyland this year. I usually always pick these up at the clearance sale, because they always have tons left.
6. If you have an artificial tree and you want to replace yours, now would be a great time to do so.
7. I usually always pick up extra Christmas light, because every year we have some that don't work.
8. Gift bags, tags, bows. I can use the bows year round for birthday presents.
9. Toys and games that are in the Christmas section. (barbies, hot wheels, travel games, etc) These work great in Easter baskets too.
10. Car care kits. They usually always have some car car gift kit that includes wax, cleaner, etc. These work great for Dad's for Father's Day or birthdays.
11. Bath and Body gift sets, for myself or for gifts. You can takes these out of the boxes they came in and make gift baskets. Great for Mother's Day!
12. Garbage bags, paper towels, etc. I was able to find holiday garbage bags one year, I stocked up and I didn't have to buy garbage bags for over 6 months. I love that! Is that weird that I get excited over cheap garbage bags?
13. Candy (we save for movie nights at our house). I will also buy some for Easter, if it isn't totally Christmas looking.
Basically, you can see that I try to use the Christmas clearance for thing that I can use year round and I do stock up on items for next years Christmas.
I will do my best to let you know when the items go to 75% and 90% off, but sometimes is varies by store according to how many Christmas items they have left.
I wanted to thank everyone that comes here to visit and has shared this blog with their friends and family. It is great to have people email me and let me know that the blog is helping their family save money, it really makes my day. Thanks also to those that take the time to share with me deals that they find, so I can post them here.

Food Storage Item of the Week - MONEY!
OK, so this week's food storage item of the week isn't actually food, it's money. We would like to add a wheat grinder to our food storage, since we don't have the entire money it takes to buy one, I am going to put some money away until we have the money we need to buy it.There really weren't any amazing deals on any food items this week, so I thought this would be a great week to start saving the money.
So, I am saving $10 for our food grinder. This is the amount I would have normally used to stock up on some items. When I save money for special items, this is what I do. I immediately transfer the money over to our savings account from our checking account. I do my banking online, so it makes it very easy to do. I then send myself and email titled "Food Storage Savings" and I put the amount that I have saved in the email. Later on when I deposit more money, I find that first email and add the newly deposited amount to what I already have saved. I add the numbers together and then forward the email to myself. This is an easy way for me to keep track of how much I have saved.
So, this week I encourage you to save $10 for whatever your food storage needs may be. You can save it for a cannery order, a future sale that comes up, food storage bins, water barrels, or whatever your need may be.
This doesn't mean that I won't add any actual food to my food storage this week, I will still pick up a few items that are a good deal. I just won't make a big bulk purchase (like the pasta or spaghetti sauce from previous weeks).
I am off to transfer my money now!

If you are looking for an ipod, I suggest looking at their refurbished ipods. I have bought 2 of the refurbished ipods from the Apple store, and they are still going strong. They come packaged in shrink wrap, so you really can't tell they are refurbished. The refurbished models include a one year warranty. I highly recommend the nano, I love mine. Great for listening to music on the treadmill and good for watching movies on airplane rides.

Quick Trip to Albertson's
I ran to Albertson's tonight to pick up a Redbox movie I put on hold. I have had a busy week, and I haven't had the chance to make out my Albertson's shopping list. I did make a quick trip to get some things I knew I had coupons for.

I picked up these items and I paid $3.50. The regular price of everything was $41.45. With my coupons and the store savings I saved $37.95. That is over 90% savings. WOO HOO!
Here is the cost break down (all prices are sale prices):
10.00 8 Steamers (4/$5.00)
7.00 3 Chex Cereal (3/$7.00)
5 .00 4 2 liter Coke Products (4/$5.00)
-4.00 General Mills save $4 when you spend $10 discount
-5.00 4 FREE Coke 2 liters when you buy 3 Chex
-1.50 Chex IP coupon
-8.00 $1.00 x 8 Steamers coupons (from Ebay)
=3.5o FINAL COST
You can check out all the Albertson's sale prices in this post here:
