My daughter Allie got a gift card to Claire's from her Aunt for Christmas. She has been so excited to go and spend her money - like RIGHT NOW Mom! With the gift card, she also received a coupon book, there is a coupon in it for every month in the year 2009.
She wanted to go to Claire's right after Christmas. I pointed out to her that she also had coupons that she could use, but she would have to wait until January. I told her she could pick out more items if she waited until January. Her gift card is worth $25. The January coupon is spend $30, Get $10 off. I told her that because she had that coupon, it was if her gift card was now worth $35 instead of $25. If she spent $35, used the $10 off coupon, that would bring her total down to $25, which is what her gift card was worth.
Once she finally caught on, it was cute to see her go through her stack of coupons to decide what the best deal would be. She decided that the January was in fact the best deal, and she is looking forward to finally using her gift card.

Megan and I did something similar at American Girl with their year end sale, a discount code and a $25 Visa gift card she got for Christmas. She got a whole box of stuff by shopping the sale items and using the code. She was a happy girl!
